Here you will find a series of notes with my thoughts from my work in progress
I've been visiting the Greco - Roman rooms at the British Museum in London.
The figure you see in the foreground is based on a sketch of one of these statues. The landscape is based on a trip to Hampstead Heath, London.
I'm working on life drawing studies at The Royal Drawing School in London. I hope to incorporate some of my drawings into my paintings. It's all about practice! Just keep going! Great teaching from tutors Sharon Brindle and Henry Gibbons Guy.
It was great to be part of the recent ING Discerning Eye Exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London. Thank you to Carol Leonard and all the artists and everyone involved for making it possible.@ingdiscerningeye @mallgalleries @parkerharrisco
Explorations in light, shape and colour.
'While with an eye made quiet by the power
Of harmony, and the deep power of joy, We see into the life of things.' (from: Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey - William Wordsworth - 1798)
Exploratory life drawing classes yesterday at leytonstone_life_drawing. Some of this work will be helpful for my future paintings. Charcoal and pastel on paper.
In this new series I want to further search, explore and develop my own personal language of painting. Making marks that follow a rhythm of light, colour and space.
'Be not afeard. The isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.' (The Tempest - William Shakespeare)
I continue to work on the images from my time on Delos in Greece in order to create a dreamlike world. The images are at times just discernible. I see them in my mind's eye but the challenge is to realise them in paint! The studies allow me to play with composition and colour.
Delos is a small but very sacred island in the Aegean sea. The ancient Greeks believed this island to be the birthplace of the Gods Apollo and Artemis.
The large 'pit' in the foreground was a place in which many offerings to the oracle were thrown. These may have consisted of small ceramic jars containing perfumes.
The poet Wilfred Owen talks about the notion that 'The poetry is in the pity.' The truth of the poem lies in the power of the emotion it expresses. I think that this same notion can work for painting.
I am working on a series of studies from photos to help prepare for a bigger painting on canvas. These are based on a recent visit to the Greek island of Delos - the ancient temple complex. The famous lions line 'The Sacred Way'.
Wonderful atmosphere among the ruins.
'The isles of Greece! the isles of Greece
Where burning Sappho loved and sung,
Where grew the arts of war and peace,
Where Delos rose, and Phoebus sprung! (Byron - The Isles of Greece')
Oil on canvas
Image based on a recent visit with my sister to Hever Castle in Kent.
I am working on some paintings for the E17arttrail exhibition and the theme is 'Value'. In this work I asked the three people - 'What do you value?' They all answered 'health'.
I placed them in an imagined landscape with a path as though on a journey. They are faced with a statue of Hygieia' (Greek goddess of health).
