My work, which includes mainly oil paintings and charcoal drawings, explores the powerful, cyclical relationship between nature and the past. Many of my earlier landscapes (Boundless and Bare and Configuration series) focus on an interest in humanity's attempts to control the natural world—through planned gardens, follies, and statues which are being reclaimed by foliage and decay. This imagery serves as a meditation on the ultimate triumph of nature and the inevitable impermanence of human endeavour.
Much of my painting is inspired by the profound reverence for nature found in the Romantic poets, such as Wordsworth, Keats, and Shelley. The emotional intensity of artists like Munch, Van Gogh, Soutine, and Rothko inspire my work which delves into the relationship between the natural world and the ghosts of the past. By inviting the viewer to share in my perspective, my work aims to foster a deeper connection to these dreamlike places.
My creative process begins in the landscape itself, where I use quick charcoal sketches and research photos to capture the mood and emotion of a place. This practice of mark-making allows me to explore the raw feeling of a scene. In the studio, these sketches evolve into more detailed drawings, which inform the composition and tonal qualities of my oil paintings. The work builds on this, using carefully selected colour palettes to deepen the mood and tell a story.
I often incorporate a human figure, typically viewed from the rear, to invite the viewer into my perspective. Whether anonymous or of a loved one, this viewpoint allows the audience to focus on what I see, fostering a shared experience and a deeper connection to the landscape.
I am fascinated by the duality of nature—its wonder alongside its menacing, untameable force—and I use this duality to re-imagine these places. Ultimately, my art seeks to explore themes of the human condition and our place within the powerful, ever-changing natural world. My current work, rooted in ancient forests, blends observation and imagination to create a sense of the otherworldly.
